Call to Rename Department of the Navy

FRA is endorsing legislation (H.R. 124) to rename the Department of the Navy as the “Department of the Navy and Marine Corps.” The bill, introduced again by Rep. Walter Jones (N.C.), is similar to past legislative efforts aimed at recognizing the Corps’ unique and distinguished mission.

In a letter of support to Jones, FRA’s National Executive Director Joe Barnes referenced previous actions that justify the Corps’ solid standing as an armed service. “[The Marine Corps] has provided exceptional and exclusive capabilities in concert with its sister services, in war and peace,” said Barnes. “Recognizing the Corps as an equal partner in a new Department of the Navy and the Marine Corps would give the Marines the distinction and esteem they truly deserve.”
