Sequester Begins

President Obama and congressional leaders from both chambers are meeting to discuss a way forward with regard to the mandatory budget cuts (known as sequestration) that become effective today. As reported since the enactment of the 2011 Budget Control Act, absent alternative federal budget plans, these mandatory spending cuts are being implemented and half of the cuts are to come from the Department of Defense.

Although active duty pay, military retirement and Social Security payments are excluded from sequestration, FRA is closely monitoring events related to other pays and benefits for members and their families and is urging readers to express their concerns about sequestration to the White House, their U.S. representatives and senators through the FRA Action Center.
