Why Do Military Spouses Work?
The Military Spouse
Corporate Career Network (MSCCN) asked more than 2,600 military spouses
why they wanted a job. The results may
surprise you.
“I expected money
to be the top response, but it only ranked third,” explained
Deb Kloeppel, president and CEO of the Military Spouse Corporate Career
Network (MSCCN), a non-profit program dedicated to providing career
opportunities and job portability for military spouses. "The number
one reason was ‘self-esteem,’ and ‘identity’
ranked number two. Based on this information, I believe underemployment
– taking a job for which you are overqualified and probably
underpaid – gets a bad rap. Being in a job that isn’t the
perfect fit offers some great opportunities. It gives you the
flexibility to make mistakes as you learn new skills. This potential for personal growth is really what self-esteem
and identity are all about.”
Bobbie Bruzdzinski, a Coast
Guard spouse who has experienced the challenges of
finding a career path during her husband's military
career, echoes the sentiment. “I didn’t always make
great money in the jobs I’ve had, but each position enriched my
life in so many other ways. Keeping that in mind has helped me make both
personal and professional decisions based on what’s really
important to me.”
