FRA Scholarship Program

FRA is proud to support America’s future leaders by awarding more than $90,000 annually in scholarships to deserving students.Image  Awardees are selected based on financial need, academic standing, character and leadership qualities. FRA scholarships are awarded to FRA members, their spouses, children, and grandchildren.

Scholarship forms for the 2009-2010 school year will be posted in September, 2008.

All applicants are considered for any scholarship the FRA is able to offer during a specific year, provided the applicant meets the eligibility requirement for the award (based on the desires of the donor).

Applicants are encouraged to be attentive to detail and complete all portions of the application.

Scholarship recipients are notified in writing and by telephone. FRA only notifies the applicants who have been selected to receive a scholarship.

FRA awards the following scholarships each year:

The FRA Scholarship

Six awards of $5,000 each.

The Schuyler S. Pyle Scholarship

One award of $5,000.

Colonel Hazel Elizabeth Benn U.S.M.C. Scholarship

Provides scholarships of $2,000 for unmarried dependent children of persons who have served or are now serving in the United States Navy as enlisted medical personnel assigned to and serving with the United States Marine Corps.

The Robert W. Nolan Emeritus Scholarship
The Glenn F. Glezen Scholarship
The Joseph R. Baranski Emeritus Scholarship

Three separate awards of $5,000 each. Preference is given to applicants enrolled in courses of study at the post-graduate (masters/doctorate) level.

The Stanley A. Doran Memorial Scholarship

One award; amount varies from year to year. Only children of FRA members in good standing are eligible for this award.

Corporate Sponsored Scholarships

FRA’s affinity partners join us in supporting higher education.  Each year FRA is able to award numerous scholarships through the generosity of our corporate partners.

All scholarship monies donated to the FRA are given to students in the form of scholarships. No part of any donation received is used for scholarship administration.

Other scholarship programs related to FRA membership are:

The Walter E. Beall Scholarship

FRA's Past Regional Presidents administer a scholarship for students who aspire to further their education in aeronautical engineering or pursue aviation-oriented degrees. These scholarships are derived from the estate of Past Regional President Southeast Walter Beall.  Applications for the Walter E. Beall Scholarships are available by writing to: Walter E. Beall Scholarship, 4911 Fennell Court, Suffolk, VA 23435, Attn: W. R. Holcombe. Requests can also be submitted via e-mail to prp.inc2@verizon.net.  Applications for the Beall Scholarship must be sent to the above address and be postmarked no later than 15 April.

The LA FRA Scholarships

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association (LA FRA) also sponsors an annual scholarship program. Applications for FRA scholarships can be used to apply for LA FRA scholarships; however applicants who wish to be considered for both FRA and LA FRA awards must submit separate application packages. (Applicants should simply check the FRA or LA FRA scholarship box on Part B of the application and address the package to the appropriate organization. Never check both boxes or your application may be disqualified.)

Branch and Unit Awards

Check with your local FRA branch or LA FRA unit to see if they sponsor a local scholarship program.

Common Pitfalls

Each year, the Scholarship Selection Committee must disqualify many worthy applicants because they (or their parents/sponsors) fail to complete the application properly. The committee encourages all applicants to review the application thoroughly and complete all portions.

Some common reasons applications are rejected include:

1. Applicants fail to submit an essay. This instruction is in bold letters directly above the area for the applicant’s signature.

2. Sponsors/parents/heads of household/applicants do not complete the financial portion of the application, or the information is obviously inaccurate. Common errors include crossing out the entire page and/or writing “Not Applicable” on it. Financial need is a selection criterion for many FRA and LA FRA scholarships.

3. Applicants fail to provide the FRA/LA FRA membership information requested, i.e. sponsor’s name, FRA status, and dependent status.
